C4.5 is an algorithm used to generate a decision tree developed by Ross Quinlan. C4.5 is an extension of Quinlan's earlier ID3 algorithm. The decision trees generated by C4.5 can be used for classification, and for this reason, C4.5 is often referred to as a statistical classifier. In 2011, authors of the Weka machine learning software described the C4.5 algorithm as "a landmark decision tree program that is probably the machine learning workhorse most widely used in practice to date". It became quite popular after ranking #1 in the Top 10 Algorithms in Data Mining pre-eminent paper published by Springer LNCS in 2008. == Algorithm == C4.5 builds decision trees from a set of training data in the same way as ID3, using the concept of information entropy. The training data is a set S = s 1 , s 2 , . . . {\displaystyle S={s_{1},s_{2},...}} of already classified samples. Each sample s i {\displaystyle s_{i}} consists of a p-dimensional vector ( x 1 , i , x 2 , i , . . . , x p , i ) {\displaystyle (x_{1,i},x_{2,i},...,x_{p,i})} , where the x j {\displaystyle x_{j}} represent attribute values or features of the sample, as well as the class in which s i {\displaystyle s_{i}} falls. At each node of the tree, C4.5 chooses the attribute of the data that most effectively splits its set of samples into subsets enriched in one class or the other. The splitting criterion is the normalized information gain (difference in entropy). The attribute with the highest normalized information gain is chosen to make the decision. The C4.5 algorithm then recurses on the partitioned sublists. This algorithm has a few base cases. All the samples in the list belong to the same class. When this happens, it simply creates a leaf node for the decision tree saying to choose that class. None of the features provide any information gain. In this case, C4.5 creates a decision node higher up the tree using the expected value of the class. Instance of previously unseen class encountered. Again, C4.5 creates a decision node higher up the tree using the expected value. === Pseudocode === In pseudocode, the general algorithm for building decision trees is: Check for the above base cases. For each attribute a, find the normalized information gain ratio from splitting on a. Let a_best be the attribute with the highest normalized information gain. Create a decision node that splits on a_best. Recurse on the sublists obtained by splitting on a_best, and add those nodes as children of node. == Improvements from ID3 algorithm == C4.5 made a number of improvements to ID3. Some of these are: Handling both continuous and discrete attributes: In order to handle continuous attributes, C4.5 creates a threshold and then splits the list into those whose attribute value is above the threshold and those that are less than or equal to it. Handling training data with missing attribute values: C4.5 allows attribute values to be marked as missing. Missing attribute values are simply not used in gain and entropy calculations. Handling attributes with differing costs. Pruning trees after creation: C4.5 goes back through the tree once it's been created and attempts to remove branches that do not help by replacing them with leaf nodes. == Improvements in C5.0/See5 algorithm == Quinlan went on to create C5.0 and See5 (C5.0 for Unix/Linux, See5 for Windows) which he markets commercially. C5.0 offers a number of improvements on C4.5. Some of these are: Speed - C5.0 is significantly faster than C4.5 (several orders of magnitude) Memory usage - C5.0 is more memory efficient than C4.5 Smaller decision trees - C5.0 gets similar results to C4.5 with considerably smaller decision trees. Support for boosting - Boosting improves the trees and gives them more accuracy. Weighting - C5.0 allows you to weight different cases and misclassification types. Winnowing - a C5.0 option automatically winnows the attributes to remove those that may be unhelpful. Reparameterization trick
The reparameterization trick (aka "reparameterization gradient estimator") is a technique used in statistical machine learning, particularly in variational inference, variational autoencoders, and stochastic optimization. It allows for the efficient computation of gradients through random variables, enabling the optimization of parametric probability models using stochastic gradient descent, and the variance reduction of estimators. It was developed in the 1980s in operations research, under the name of "pathwise gradients", or "stochastic gradients". Active networking
Active networking is a communication pattern that allows packets flowing through a telecommunications network to dynamically modify the operation of the network. Active network architecture is composed of execution environments (similar to a unix shell that can execute active packets), a node operating system capable of supporting one or more execution environments. It also consists of active hardware, capable of routing or switching as well as executing code within active packets. This differs from the traditional network architecture which seeks robustness and stability by attempting to remove complexity and the ability to change its fundamental operation from underlying network components. Network processors are one means of implementing active networking concepts. Active networks have also been implemented as overlay networks. == What does it offer? == Active networking allows the possibility of highly tailored and rapid "real-time" changes to the underlying network operation. This enables such ideas as sending code along with packets of information allowing the data to change its form (code) to match the channel characteristics. The smallest program that can generate a sequence of data can be found in the definition of Kolmogorov complexity. The use of real-time genetic algorithms within the network to compose network services is also enabled by active networking. == How it relates to other networking paradigms == Active networking relates to other networking paradigms primarily based upon how computing and communication are partitioned in the architecture. === Active networking and software-defined networking === Active networking is an approach to network architecture with in-network programmability. The name derives from a comparison with network approaches advocating minimization of in-network processing, based on design advice such as the "end-to-end argument". Two major approaches were conceived: programmable network elements ("switches") and capsules, a programmability approach that places computation within packets traveling through the network. Treating packets as programs later became known as "active packets". Software-defined networking decouples the system that makes decisions about where traffic is sent (the control plane) from the underlying systems that forward traffic to the selected destination (the data plane). The concept of a programmable control plane originated at the University of Cambridge in the Systems Research Group, where (using virtual circuit identifiers available in Asynchronous Transfer Mode switches) multiple virtual control planes were made available on a single physical switch. Control Plane Technologies (CPT) was founded to commercialize this concept. == Fundamental challenges == Active network research addresses the nature of how best to incorporate extremely dynamic capability within networks. In order to do this, active network research must address the problem of optimally allocating computation versus communication within communication networks. A similar problem related to the compression of code as a measure of complexity is addressed via algorithmic information theory. One of the challenges of active networking has been the inability of information theory to mathematically model the active network paradigm and enable active network engineering. This is due to the active nature of the network in which communication packets contain code that dynamically change the operation of the network. Fundamental advances in information theory are required in order to understand such networks. == Nanoscale active networks == As the limit in reduction of transistor size is reached with current technology, active networking concepts are being explored as a more efficient means accomplishing computation and communication. Bioelectronics
Bioelectronics is a field of research in the convergence of biology and electronics. == Definitions == At the first C.E.C. Workshop, in Brussels in November 1991, bioelectronics was defined as 'the use of biological materials and biological architectures for information processing systems and new devices'. Bioelectronics, specifically bio-molecular electronics, were described as 'the research and development of bio-inspired (i.e. self-assembly) inorganic and organic materials and of bio-inspired (i.e. massive parallelism) hardware architectures for the implementation of new information processing systems, sensors and actuators, and for molecular manufacturing down to the atomic scale'. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), an agency of the United States Department of Commerce, defined bioelectronics in a 2009 report as "the discipline resulting from the convergence of biology and electronics". Sources for information about the field include the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with its Elsevier journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics published since 1990. The journal describes the scope of bioelectronics as seeking to : "... exploit biology in conjunction with electronics in a wider context encompassing, for example, biological fuel cells, bionics and biomaterials for information processing, information storage, electronic components and actuators. A key aspect is the interface between biological materials and micro and nano-electronics." == History == The first known study of bioelectronics took place in the 18th century when Italian physician-scientist Luigi Galvani applied a voltage to a pair of detached frog legs. The legs moved, sparking the genesis of bioelectronics. Electronics technology has been applied to biology and medicine since the pacemaker was invented and with the medical imaging industry. In 2009, a survey of publications using the term in title or abstract suggested that the center of activity was in Europe (43 percent), followed by Asia (23 percent) and the United States (20 percent). == Materials == Organic bioelectronics is the application of organic electronic material to the field of bioelectronics. Organic materials (i.e. containing carbon) show great promise when it comes to interfacing with biological systems. Current applications focus around neuroscience and infection. Conducting polymer coatings, an organic electronic material, shows massive improvement in the technology of materials. It was the most sophisticated form of electrical stimulation. It improved the impedance of electrodes in electrical stimulation, resulting in better recordings and reducing "harmful electrochemical side reactions." Organic Electrochemical Transistors (OECT) were invented in 1984 by Mark Wrighton and colleagues, which had the ability to transport ions. This improved signal-to-noise ratio and gives for low measured impedance. The Organic Electronic Ion Pump (OEIP), a device that could be used to target specific body parts and organs to adhere medicine, was created by Magnuss Berggren. As one of the few materials well established in CMOS technology, titanium nitride (TiN) turned out as exceptionally stable and well suited for electrode applications in medical implants. == Significant applications == Bioelectronics is used to help improve the lives of people with disabilities and diseases. For example, the glucose monitor is a portable device that allows diabetic patients to control and measure their blood sugar levels. Electrical stimulation used to treat patients with epilepsy, chronic pain, Parkinson's, deafness, Essential Tremor and blindness. Magnuss Berggren and colleagues created a variation of his OEIP, the first bioelectronic implant device that was used in a living, free animal for therapeutic reasons. It transmitted electric currents into GABA, an acid. A lack of GABA in the body is a factor in chronic pain. GABA would then be dispersed properly to the damaged nerves, acting as a painkiller. Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is used to activate the Cholinergic Anti-inflammatory Pathway (CAP) in the vagus nerve, ending in reduced inflammation in patients with diseases like arthritis. Since patients with depression and epilepsy are more vulnerable to having a closed CAP, VNS can aid them as well. At the same time, not all the systems that have electronics used to help improving the lives of people are necessarily bioelectronic devices, but only those which involve an intimate and directly interface of electronics and biological systems. Bioelectronics could be used to develop new label-free methods for monitoring cancer cell invasion and drug resistance. For example, the electrical resistance of cancer cells could be used to predict the effectiveness of cancer drugs and to identify drugs that are most likely to be effective against a particular type of cancer. === Human tissue regeneration === Human tissue, like most tissue in multicellular life, is known to be capable of regeneration. While tissue such as skin and even large organs such as the liver have been shown significant capacity for regeneration much of the adult body is thought to possess limited natural regenerative ability. Research in the field of regenerative medicine has identified that developmental bioelectricity can be used to stimulate and modify tissue growth beyond what naturally occurs with efforts to demonstrate its feasibility in mammals underway. Some researchers believe that future advancements could allow for the regeneration of organs or even entire limbs using bioelectronic devices providing the correct signals. == Future == The improvement of standards and tools to monitor the state of cells at subcellular resolutions is lacking funding and employment. This is a problem because advances in other fields of science are beginning to analyze large cell populations, increasing the need for a device that can monitor cells at such a level of sight. Cells cannot be used in many ways other than their main purpose, like detecting harmful substances. Merging this science with forms of nanotechnology could result in incredibly accurate detection methods. The preserving of human lives like protecting against bioterrorism is the biggest area of work being done in bioelectronics. Governments are starting to demand devices and materials that detect chemical and biological threats. The more the size of the devices decrease, there will be an increase in performance and capabilities.
Open Mashup Alliance
The Open Mashup Alliance (OMA) is a non-profit consortium that promotes the adoption of mashup solutions in the enterprise through the evolution of enterprise mashup standards like EMML. The initial members of the OMA include some large technology companies such as Adobe Systems, Hewlett-Packard, and Intel and some major technology users such as Bank of America and Capgemini. According to Dion Hinchcliffe, "Ultimately, the OMA creates a standardized approach to enterprise mashups that creates an open and vibrant market for competing runtimes, mashups, and an array of important aftermarket services such as development/testing tools, management and administration appliances, governance frameworks, education, professional services, and so on." == Specification development == The initial focus of the OMA is developing EMML, which is a declarative mashup domain-specific language (DSL) aimed at creating enterprise mashups. The EMML language provides a comprehensive set of high-level mashup-domain vocabulary to consume and mash a variety of web data sources. EMML provides a uniform syntax to invoke heterogeneous service styles: REST, WSDL, RSS/ATOM, RDBMS, and POJO. EMML also provides the ability to mix and match diverse data formats: XML, JSON, JDBC, JavaObjects, and primitive types. The OMA website provides the EMML specification, the EMML schema, a reference runtime implementation capable of running EMML scripts, sample EMML mashup scripts, and technical documentation. The OMA is developing EMML under a Creative Commons Attribution No Derivatives license. The eventual objective of the OMA is to submit the EMML specification and any other OMA specifications to a recognized industry standards body.
Bigram
A bigram or digram is a sequence of two adjacent elements from a string of tokens, which are typically letters, syllables, or words. A bigram is an n-gram for n=2. The frequency distribution of every bigram in a string is commonly used for simple statistical analysis of text in many applications, including in computational linguistics, cryptography, and speech recognition. Gappy bigrams or skipping bigrams are word pairs which allow gaps (perhaps avoiding connecting words, or allowing some simulation of dependencies, as in a dependency grammar). == Applications == Bigrams, along with other n-grams, are used in most successful language models for speech recognition. Bigram frequency attacks can be used in cryptography to solve cryptograms. See frequency analysis. Bigram frequency is one approach to statistical language identification. Some activities in logology or recreational linguistics involve bigrams. Content Credentials
Content Credentials (also known as C2PA signatures) are a digital media metadata specification. They aim to provide provenance information about a piece of media (such as an image or a video) and help prove its authenticity. They are described as the equivalent of nutrition labels for digital media. One of the stated goal of this specification is to fight online disinformation. The specification is written and maintained by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a group of many media and tech organizations including Adobe, Amazon, the BBC, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Sony. Another organization, the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), is responsible for promoting the standard and accelerate its adoption. The standard relies on cryptographic digital signatures. == Adoption == There are two main stakeholders who can implement Content Credentials: Producers (softwares and hardwares that produce or modify digital media) and publishers (softwares that show digital media to users). === Producers === ==== Adobe ==== Adobe is one of the first companies to implement the specification, announcing support in Photoshop in 2021. Content Credentials can be enabled and the complete history of edits is kept. ==== Google ==== Google announced support for Content Credentials on its Pixel 10 phones in August 2025. The Content Credentials are embedded on each picture taken from the Pixel Camera, and modifications done using Google Photos. Information include picture timestamp and a non-identifiable signature that proves it was taken from a Pixel 10. As for Google Photos, a list of AI and non-AI edits are kept. Google is the first company to introduce support for Content Credentials on either phones or consumer-grade devices, and also the first company to make it available for free to all users. ==== Nikon ==== Nikon announced in 2024 that their Z6 III camera would support embedding Content Credentials in its photos. However, in 2025, a vulnerability was discovered in the software of the camera that allowed to combine unauthentic images with authentic photos and still have the resulting image with a valid digital signature. Nikon revoked the certificates. ==== Media organizations ==== CBC/Radio-Canada and the BBC both have started attaching Content Credentials to media they produce or verify. ==== OpenAI ==== OpenAI embeds Content Credentials on the images and videos it generates that includes that the media was created by AI using their platforms. ==== Sony ==== In June 2025, Sony announced the release of its Camera Verify system for press photographers and news editors using C2PA digital signatures. Initially, the system will be limited to still images, high‑end cameras, and selected news agencies. Registration with Sony Creators' Cloud is also required. === Publishers === ==== LinkedIn ==== In 2024, LinkedIn started showing a "CR" icon on images that contain Content Credentials of AI-generated images. In 2025, they announced a partnership with Adobe to allow photographers to prove ownership of images using Content Credentials. ==== TikTok ==== TikTok announced in 2024 that an "AI-generated" label would be applied to videos containing Content Credentials if they were AI-generated. In 2025, they announced that users could control the amount of AI-generated content they see, using self-reported labels, Content Credentials and an invisible, proprietary AI watermark embedded in videos by their AI editor tool. ==== YouTube ==== In 2024, YouTube started showing to users a label that reads "captured with a camera" on videos that show authentic, unedited videos taken by Content Credentials-compatible cameras.
