    IBM designed, manufactured and sold optical mark and character readers from 1960 until 1984. The IBM 1287 is notable as being the first commercially sold scanner capable of reading handwritten numbers. == Initial development work == IBM Poughkeepsie studied machine character recognition from 1950 till 1954, developing an experimental machine that used a cathode-ray-tube attached an IBM 701 which performed the character analysis. They pursued a technique known as lakes and bays which examined different areas of dark and light where the lakes were white areas enclosed by black and the bays were partially enclosed areas. Their machine and mission was moved to IBM Endicott in 1954, where research continued. From 1955 to 1956 they then worked on the VIDOR (Visual Document Reader) program, but they could not get agreement on acceptable reject rate. The developers felt 80% recognition was acceptable (meaning 20% of documents would need to be manually processed), while product planners and IBM Marketing felt that compared to punched card, the reject rate was unacceptably high. This led to no new products being released. In 1956 the American Bankers Association chose to use Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) to automate check handling, rejecting a proposed solution generated by an IBM Poughkeepsie banking project that used optical characters formed by vertical bars and digits. IBM developed a magnetic read head to handle the new standard, releasing the IBM 1210 MICR reader/sorter in 1959. The development work for this product both with read heads and document handling, helped move optical character recognition forward, with development focusing on reading one or two lines of print from a paper document larger than an IBM punched card. The first product to be released was the IBM 1418. == IBM 123x Optical Mark Readers == The IBM 1230, IBM 1231, and IBM 1232 were optical mark readers used to input the contents of data sources such as questionnaires, test results, surveys as well as historical data that could be easily entered as marks on sheets. Educational institutes used them to score test results and they were effectively a replacement for the IBM 805 Test Scoring Machine that used electrical resistance and a mark sense pencil to score a test, rather than optical mark detection. They were developed and manufactured by IBM Rochester. They have the following features: A pneumatic input hopper that can hold approximately 600 sheets Two output stackers: the normal stacker that holds 600 sheets and the select (or reject) stacker which holds 50 sheets. Pluggable SMS printed circuit cards They can read positional marks made by a lead pencil using an optical read head that consists of photovoltaic(solar) cells and lamps The 1230 has 21 photovoltaic cells, 20 for reading the pencil marks and one to read timing marks on the right hand border of the sheet. Uses electromechanical devices known as sonic delay lines to store results. === IBM 1230 Optical Mark Scoring Reader === The IBM 1230 is an offline optical mark scoring machine announced on 2 November 1962 that was designed to read and scores 1,200 answer sheets per hour. Scored results are printed via a wire matrix printer on the right margin of each answer sheet as it is processed. Two master sheets are required for the process: one that encoded the correct answers and one for the machine to record run information. Output could be sent to an IBM 534 Model 3 Card Punch as an option, which limits throughput to 750 sheets per hour when punching 80 columns of data. === IBM 1231 Optical Mark Page Reader === The IBM 1231 is an online optical mark reader that was designed to read and score 2000 test answer sheets per hour, depending on downstream operations. The correct answers for the test can either be entered using a master sheet (like the 1230) or sent to the 1231 using the optional master-mark special feature. === IBM 1232 Optical Mark Page Reader === The IBM 1232 is an offline optical mark reader that was designed to read up to 2000 marked sheets per hour. Documents can be read at up to 2000 sheets per hour, but this depends on the number of characters that need to be punched from each sheet. The IBM 1232 reads the marks and then punches them into cards using a IBM 534 Model 3 Card Punch. Together they can read up to 64,000 characters per hour or 800 fully punched cards. === Example customers === The California Test Bureau (CTB) that provided standardised achievement tests for educational institutes across the USA, began replacing their IBM 805s with IBM 1230s in 1963. They then installed two IBM 1232s in 1964. Being able to use a full 8+1⁄2 in × 11 in (22 cm × 28 cm) answer sheet rather than a 7+3⁄8 in × 3+1⁄4 in (18.7 cm × 8.3 cm) mark sense card, eliminated the need to use multiple answer cards per test per student, as well as dramatically increased the marking speed for test answers. Credit Bureau Services of Dallas used an IBM 1232 in 1966 as part of their first computerisation project. They marked credit history data onto optical scanning sheets that were fed into their IBM 1232. The attached IBM 534 then punched this data onto punched cards, which were then fed into their IBM System/360 Model 30. In 1968 the US Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC) began using special log books for their coastal surveyors to record coastal survey data, which was then converted to punched cards by an IBM 1232. == IBM 2956 Optical Mark/Hole Reader == The IBM 2956 Models 2 and 3 are custom build optical mark/hole readers designed to be attached to an IBM 2740 Communications Terminal. The IBM 2956-2 can read cards that have either been hand or machine marked or that have been punched. The cards can be fed by hand or from the 400 card hopper. It has a 400 card stacker. The 2956-2 could be ordered by request for price quotation (RPQ) 843086. The IBM 2956-3 can read cards that have either been hand or machine marked or that have been punched. It can also read marked sheets up to 9 in × 14 in (230 mm × 360 mm) in size, although only a 3+1⁄4 in (83 mm) band along the side of the sheet can be read (the width of a punched card). It does not have a hopper or a stacker, so each card or sheet must be manually fed into the machine. The 2956-3 could be ordered by request for price quotation (RPQ) 843106. The 2956-3 could be attached to an IBM 3276 or IBM 3278 display station with RPQ UB9001. One use case for the IBM 2956 is to grade school tests. On completion of a learning module a student can use an optical scan-type card to record answers to up to 27 questions, with up to 5 choices per question. They are scanned by the reader and the results are then transmitted to an IBM System/360 in remote job entry mode and can also be printed on the IBM 2740. It proved popular and within two years of announcement 100 machines were installed or on order. === Example customer === The New York Department of Motor Vehicles reported that from 1964 until 1968 they were using an IBM 1282 to read machine printed license renewal slips that had been mailed back as part of the renewal process.     The machine translation of sign languages has been possible, albeit in a limited fashion, since 1977. When a research project successfully matched English letters from a keyboard to ASL manual alphabet letters which were simulated on a robotic hand. These technologies translate signed languages into written or spoken language, and written or spoken language to sign language, without the use of a human interpreter. Sign languages possess different phonological features than spoken languages, which has created obstacles for developers. Developers use computer vision and machine learning to recognize specific phonological parameters and epentheses unique to sign languages, and speech recognition and natural language processing allow interactive communication between hearing and deaf people. == Limitations == Sign language translation technologies are limited in the same way as spoken language translation. None can translate with 100% accuracy. In fact, sign language translation technologies are far behind their spoken language counterparts. This is, in no trivial way, due to the fact that signed languages have multiple articulators. Where spoken languages are articulated through the vocal tract, signed languages are articulated through the hands, arms, head, shoulders, torso, and parts of the face. This multi-channel articulation makes translating sign languages very difficult. An additional challenge for sign language MT is the fact that there is no formal written format for signed languages. There are notations systems but no writing system has been adopted widely enough, by the international Deaf community, that it could be considered the 'written form' of a given sign language. Sign Languages then are recorded in various video formats. There is no gold standard parallel corpus that is large enough for SMT, for example. == History == The history of automatic sign language translation started with the development of hardware such as finger-spelling robotic hands. In 1977, a finger-spelling hand project called RALPH (short for "Robotic Alphabet") created a robotic hand that can translate alphabets into finger-spellings. Later, the use of gloves with motion sensors became the mainstream, and some projects such as the CyberGlove and VPL Data Glove were born. The wearable hardware made it possible to capture the signers' hand shapes and movements with the help of the computer software. However, with the development of computer vision, wearable devices were replaced by cameras due to their efficiency and fewer physical restrictions on signers. To process the data collected through the devices, researchers implemented neural networks such as the Stuttgart Neural Network Simulator for pattern recognition in projects such as the CyberGlove. Researchers also use many other approaches for sign recognition. For example, Hidden Markov Models are used to analyze data statistically, and GRASP and other machine learning programs use training sets to improve the accuracy of sign recognition. In February 2015 Thomas Pryor, a hearing student from the University of Washington, created the first prototype for this device at Hack Arizona, a hackathon at the University of Arizona. Pryor continued to develop the invention and in October 2015, Pryor brought Navid Azodi onto the SignAloud project for marketing and help with public relations. Azodi has a rich background and involvement in business administration, while Pryor has a wealth of experience in engineering. In May 2016, the duo told NPR that they are working more closely with people who use ASL so that they can better understand their audience and tailor their product to the needs of these people rather than the assumed needs. However, no further versions have been released since then. The invention was one of seven to win the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, which seeks to award and applaud young inventors. Their invention fell under the "Use it!" category of the award which includes technological advances to existing products. They were awarded $10,000. The gloves have sensors that track the users hand movements and then send the data to a computer system via Bluetooth. The computer system analyzes the data and matches it to English words, which are then spoken aloud by a digital voice. The gloves do not have capability for written English input to glove movement output or the ability to hear language and then sign it to a deaf person, which means they do not provide reciprocal communication. The device also does not incorporate facial expressions and other nonmanual markers of sign languages, which may alter the actual interpretation from ASL. === ProDeaf === ProDeaf (WebLibras) is a computer software that can translate both text and voice into Portuguese Libras (Portuguese Sign Language) "with the goal of improving communication between the deaf and hearing." There is currently a beta edition in production for American Sign Language as well. The original team began the project in 2010 with a combination of experts including linguists, designers, programmers, and translators, both hearing and deaf. The team originated at Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) from a group of students involved in a computer science project. The group had a deaf team member who had difficulty communicating with the rest of the group. In order to complete the project and help the teammate communicate, the group created Proativa Soluções and have been moving forward ever since. The current beta version in American Sign Language is very limited. For example, there is a dictionary section and the only word under the letter 'j' is 'jump'. If the device has not been programmed with the word, then the digital avatar must fingerspell the word. The last update of the app was in June 2016, but ProDeaf has been featured in over 400 stories across the country's most popular media outlets. The application cannot read sign language and turn it into word or text, so it only serves as a one-way communication. Additionally, the user cannot sign to the app and receive an English translation in any form, as English is still in the beta edition. === Kinect Sign Language Translator === Since 2012, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and specialists of deaf education from Beijing Union University in China have been collaborating with Microsoft Research Asian team to create Kinect Sign Language Translator. The translator consists of two modes: translator mode and communication mode. The translator mode is capable of translating single words from sign into written words and vice versa. The communication mode can translate full sentences and the conversation can be automatically translated with the use of the 3D avatar. The translator mode can also detect the postures and hand shapes of a signer as well as the movement trajectory using the technologies of machine learning, pattern recognition, and computer vision. The device also allows for reciprocal communication because the speech recognition technology allows the spoken language to be translated into the sign language and the 3D modeling avatar can sign back to the deaf people. The original project was started in China based on translating Chinese Sign Language. In 2013, the project was presented at Microsoft Research Faculty Summit and Microsoft company meeting. Currently, this project is also being worked by researchers in the United States to implement American Sign Language translation.     Spatiotemporal reservoir resampling, commonly known as ReSTIR (from "Reservoir-based SpatioTemporal Importance Resampling"), is a collection of computer graphics techniques for reusing samples during rendering. It was developed primarily to allow more realistic lighting in real-time rendering, because relatively few rays can be traced per pixel while maintaining an acceptable frame rate. It can also be used to speed up off-line path tracing. The first ReSTIR paper, published in 2020, provided algorithms for direct lighting, allowing scenes containing thousands of lights to be rendered in real time on a high-end GPU. Researchers later proposed versions for rendering indirect lighting (and more recently, motion blur and depth of field) and built up a framework of mathematical concepts and notation conventions that help analyze such algorithms. A major focus of this work is removing or reducing the bias that could be introduced when samples from other pixels or frames are reused—or selectively allowing some bias in order to speed up rendering and reduce variance (visible as "noise" in the image). Versions for path tracing apply transformations called shift mappings to samples, typically reusing parts of paths closer to the light and modifying the portion closer to the camera. ReSTIR-related papers and talks have been presented every year at the SIGGRAPH conference since 2020. One of the first games to incorporate ReSTIR into its rendering was Cyberpunk 2077. == Overview and motivation == According to Chris Wyman, one of the co-authors of the original paper, although developers commonly thought that bias was acceptable for real-time rendering, end users (e.g. gamers) are well-aware of the artifacts caused by bias and many have a negative opinion of common sample-reuse techniques such as temporal anti-aliasing (TAA), which may cause "ghosting" when the camera moves, and denoising, which causes blurring and other artifacts. ReSTIR techniques can reduce or avoid these types of bias by reusing samples of the set of possible paths taken by light to reach the camera, instead of reusing rendered pixel color values (which are typically the average of multiple samples, discarding information such as the direction of the light). While other techniques reuse samples in a generic post-processing step, ReSTIR passes can test for shadowing, and reused samples are converted into pixel color values by rendering code that takes the characteristics of different materials into account (e.g. by implementing BRDFs). However the output of ReSTIR is noisy, and a denoising pass is typically still used. Stochastic ray tracing techniques such as path tracing need to average multiple samples (produced by tracing individual rays) in order to render a visually acceptable image. When using a simple unbiased renderer based on Monte Carlo integration, halving the deviation of the result (apparent as "noise" in the image) requires multiplying the number of samples by four, meaning that a rapidly increasingly number of samples is needed to improve quality, Standard ways to mitigate this problem include importance sampling (which requires finding improved sampling distributions for specific situations), and quasi-Monte Carlo integration (which usually still requires tracing a large number of rays). ReSTIR offers a solution that multiplies the effective number of samples while tracing a fixed number of additional rays per frame. Temporal reuse multiplies the effective sample count by the number of frames rendered. Spatial reuse multiplies the effective count by the number of neighboring pixels examined. These two types of reuse can be combined, allowing spatial reuse to be applied recursively, which appears to offer an exponentially increasing effective sample count, however this is quickly limited by the size of the neighborhood used for spatial reuse. Spatial reuse is also potentially less effective near shadow and object edges, especially for objects with fine geometric detail, and temporal reuse is limited by movement of the camera and scene elements. == Variations == Many variations of ReSTIR have been proposed that generalize or improve the original technique (which builds on an earlier method called RIS), specialize it for particular types of illumination or other visual effects, or allow incorporation into rendering algorithms other than standard path tracing. Some published versions are listed below. == Algorithms == === Basic algorithm === ReSTIR uses a combination of resampled importance sampling (RIS) and weighted reservoir sampling (WRS) which the authors call streaming RIS. RIS processes samples from an initial probability distribution (e.g. a probability distribution for which a cheap sampling method exists) and generates samples in a new probability distribution (e.g. a sampling distribution that is optimal for rendering but is impractical to draw samples from directly). WRS allows this to be done while storing only a small number of samples in memory, which is especially helpful on a GPU. Information about the samples is stored in a data structure called a reservoir. WRS also allows samples from multiple reservoirs to be combined ("merged") into a single reservoir; this is crucial for sample reuse. Each pixel has a reservoir, typically containing only a single sample when ReSTIR is used for real-time rendering (some implementations use a larger number, e.g. four samples). The reservoir is typically initialized to a sample drawn using a simple method and is then updated by RIS steps and by reservoir merging, so that the pixel value produced by shading using the sample(s) currently in the reservoir, times the weight for the sample, is always an unbiased estimate of the correct pixel value. If appropriate resampling steps are used, the variance of this estimate (or some function of it, typically the luminance of the RGB color value) decreases with each step. A possible sequence of steps performed for each frame, suitable for computing unbiased direct illumination (DI) is: Perform reservoir resampling by drawing multiple light samples and using streaming RIS to choose one, using probabilities based on a target function, e.g. the luminance of the sample's contribution to the pixel. A weight is also computed for the sample. Typically, a single visibility check is performed here, after choosing a sample, setting the weight to 0 if the light is shadowed. The intent is to reduce the number of rays traced, relying on the sample reuse in steps 2 and 3 to make up for the loss of quality caused by rejecting many of the rays due to shadowing. A large part of the initial efforts to optimize ReSTIR (to make it run in real-time on available hardware) went into reducing the cost of randomly sampling the lights. Glossy surfaces may require a larger number of samples, and combining light sampling with BRDF sampling (using MIS) may increase quality. Step 2 (temporal reuse) is sometimes skipped for off-line rendering, and the output of multiple repetitions of initial sampling and spatial reuse is averaged instead; this helps avoids artifacts due to correlations.
