Computer Power and Human Reason: From Judgment to Calculation is a 1976 nonfiction book by German-American computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum in which he contends that while artificial intelligence may be possible, we should never allow computers to make important decisions, as they will always lack human qualities such as compassion and wisdom. == Background == Before writing Computer Power and Human Reason, Weizenbaum had garnered significant attention for creating the ELIZA program, an early milestone in conversational computing. His firsthand observation of people attributing human-like qualities to a simple program prompted him to reflect more deeply on society's readiness to entrust moral and ethical considerations to machines. == Reception and legacy == Computer Power and Human Reason sparked scholarly debate on the acceptable scope of AI applications, particularly in fields where human welfare and ethical considerations are paramount. Early academic reviews highlighted that Weizenbaum's stance pushed readers to recognize that even as computers grow more capable, they lack the intrinsic moral compass and empathy required for certain kinds of judgment. The book caused disagreement with, and separation from, other members of the artificial intelligence research community, a status the author later said he'd come to take pride in.

Figure AI

Figure AI, Inc. is an American robotics company developing humanoid robots that operate via artificial intelligence. The company was founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock. As of late 2025, the company has a $39 billion valuation. Three generations of humanoid robots (Figure 01–03) have been developed, as well as two iterations of a vision-language-action model (Helix 01–02), which can control up to two robots at once. By 2026, the robots demonstrated the potential ability to perform household work and the company gained publicity when a Figure 03 appeared at a White House event. == History == Figure AI was founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock, also known for founding Archer Aviation and Vettery. That year, the company introduced its prototype, Figure 01, a bipedal robot designed for manual labor, initially targeting the logistics and warehousing sectors. The initial model utilized external cabling for easier maintenance. In May 2023, Figure AI raised $70 million from investors including Adcock, who invested $20 million, and Parkway Venture Capital. In January 2024, Figure AI announced a partnership with BMW to deploy humanoid robots in automotive manufacturing facilities. In February 2024, Figure AI secured $675 million in venture capital funding from a consortium that includes Jeff Bezos, Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel, and the startup-funding divisions of Amazon and OpenAI; the company was then valued at $2.6 billion. Figure AI also announced a partnership with OpenAI, which would build specialized artificial intelligence (AI) models for Figure AI's humanoid robots, enabling its robots to process language; the collaboration ended after a year, with Adcock stating that large language models had become a smaller problem compared to those allowing for "high rate robot control". In August 2024, the company introduced Figure 02, describing it as the next step toward deploying humanoids for industrial use. The machine has 35 degrees of freedom (DOF), while the five-fingered hands have 16 DOF and the ability to carry up to 25 kilograms (55 lb). The model is equipped with cabling integrated into the limbs, a torso-placed battery, six RGB cameras, and an onboard vision-language-action (VLA) model. It has three times the computing power (including inference AI) of the previous model, including two graphics processing units, supported by Nvidia. Microphones, speakers, and custom AI models (developed with OpenAI) enable communication with humans. In early 2025, Figure AI announced BotQ, a manufacturing facility aiming to produce 12,000 humanoids per year with the help of its own humanoid robots, and Helix, a VLA model that can control up to two robots at once. Helix enables a robot to interact with the world without extensive manual training, according to the company allowing it to pick up nearly any small household object. By April, the company issued cease-and-desist letters to at least two secondary brokers promoting its private stock without authorization. In September, a third round of financing exceeded $1 billion, raising the company's total valuation to $39 billion. Investors included Brookfield Asset Management, Intel, Macquarie Capital, Nvidia, Parkway Venture Capital, Qualcomm, Salesforce, and T-Mobile. In October 2025, Figure 03 was introduced. According to the company, its hardware and software redesign aims to create a general-purpose robot able to learn directly from humans. An upgraded camera system delivers twice the frame rate, a quarter the latency, and a 60% wider field of view, in addition to a camera in each hand. Tactile sensors in the fingertips can detect forces as little as 3 grams (0.1 oz). It incorporates soft materials and a protected battery for safety, and removable, washable textiles. It supports wireless inductive charging. In November 2025, the former head of product safety sued the company on the basis of being fired for raising the concern that the company's robots were strong enough to fracture a human skull. By early 2026, Figure 02 had been used in demonstrations showing that it could load a washing machine, sort packages, and fold laundry. That January, Helix 02 was released, expanding the AI model to the entire body to allow for functional autonomy. A Helix 02–powered Figure 02 was shown to be capable of loading and unloading a dishwasher, based on hours of motion-capture data and simulation-based machine learning. In March, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump appeared at the White House with a Figure 03, promoting the presumptive eventual ability of AI to teach children. In May 2026, Figure AI livestreamed a group of their robots processing packages nonstop for almost a week, inspiring a 10-hour competition between their robot and a human, in which the robot performed 98.5% as well as the human.

Yann LeCun

Yann André Le Cun ( lə-KUN; French: [ləkœ̃]; usually spelled LeCun; born 8 July 1960) is a French-American computer scientist working in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, robotics and image compression. He is the Jacob T. Schwartz Professor of Computer Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He served as Chief AI Scientist at Meta Platforms before co-founding Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs in December 2025. He is well known for his work on optical character recognition and computer vision using convolutional neural networks (CNNs). He is also one of the main creators of the DjVu image compression technology, alongside Léon Bottou and Patrick Haffner. He co-developed the Lush programming language with Léon Bottou. In 2018, LeCun, Yoshua Bengio, and Geoffrey Hinton received the Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for their work on deep learning. LeCun, Bengio, and Hinton, and occasionally Jürgen Schmidhuber, are sometimes referred to as the "Godfathers of AI" and "Godfathers of Deep Learning". == Early life and education == Yann André Le Cun was born on 8 July 1960 at Soisy-sous-Montmorency, in the suburbs of Paris. His surname, Le Cun, derives from the old Breton form Le Cunff and originates from the region of Guingamp in northern Brittany. Yann is the Breton form of Jean, the French form of John. He received a Diplôme d'Ingénieur from the ESIEE Paris in 1983 and a PhD in computer science from Université Pierre et Marie Curie (now Sorbonne University) in 1987, during which he proposed an early form of backpropagation, an algorithm crucial for enabling neural networks to learn. Before joining AT&T, LeCun was a postdoctoral researcher for a year, starting in 1987, supervised by Geoffrey Hinton at the University of Toronto. LeCun has three sons, and his brother is employed by Google. He has American citizenship. == Career and research == LeCun's career has been spent primarily at Bell Labs, New York University and Meta Platforms, Inc. === Bell Labs === In 1988, LeCun joined the Adaptive Systems Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey, United States, headed by Lawrence D. Jackel, where he developed a number of new machine learning methods, such as a biologically inspired model of image recognition called convolutional neural networks (LeNet), the "Optimal Brain Damage" regularization methods, and the Graph Transformer Networks method (similar to conditional random field), which he applied to handwriting recognition and Optical character recognition (OCR). The bank check recognition system that he helped develop was widely deployed by NCR and other companies. In 1996, he joined AT&T Labs-Research as head of the Image Processing Research Department, which was part of Lawrence Rabiner's Speech and Image Processing Research Lab, and worked primarily on the DjVu image compression technology, a format designed for efficient distribution of scanned documents, and used by the Internet Archive to provide access to digitized texts. His collaborators at AT&T include Léon Bottou and Vladimir Vapnik. === New York University === After a brief tenure as a fellow of NEC Research Institute, LeCun joined New York University in 2003, where he is Jacob T. Schwartz Chaired Professor of Computer Science and Neural Science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the Center for Neural Science. At NYU, he has worked primarily on energy-based models for supervised and unsupervised learning, feature learning for object recognition in computer vision, and mobile robotics. In 2012, he became the founding director of the NYU Center for Data Science. On 9 December 2013, LeCun became the first director of Meta AI Research in New York City and in early 2014 stepped down from the NYU–CDS directorship. In 2013, he and Yoshua Bengio co-founded the International Conference on Learning Representations, which adopted a post-publication open review process he previously advocated on his website. He was the chair and organiser of the "Learning Workshop" held every year between 1986 and 2012 in Snowbird, Utah. He is a member of the Science Advisory Board of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics at UCLA. He is the co-director of the Learning in Machines and Brain research program (formerly Neural Computation & Adaptive Perception) of CIFAR. In 2016, he was the visiting professor of computer science on the Chaire Annuelle Informatique et Sciences Numériques at Collège de France in Paris, where he presented the leçon inaugurale (inaugural lecture). In 2023, he was named as the inaugural Jacob T. Schwartz Chaired Professor in Computer Science at NYU's Courant Institute. LeCun is also a scientific advisor to French research group Kyutai which is being funded by Xavier Niel, Rodolphe Saadé, Eric Schmidt, and others. === Meta Platforms === LeCun joined Facebook (now Meta Platforms) in 2013 as chief AI scientist and led the company's AI research laboratory, FAIR. === AMI Labs === On 19 November 2025, LeCun confirmed that he would be leaving Meta after ten years to found his own company focused on world-model architectures and human-like artificial intelligence he calls superintelligence. The company he founded, Advanced Machine Intelligence Labs (or AMI Labs), is run by CEO Alex LeBrun, with LeCun serving as Executive Chair. This venture is focused on building AI "world models": systems that learn to understand the physical world's structure and dynamics rather than just predict text like large language models. In March 2026, AMI announced it had raised $1.03 billion in funding at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation. The funding round was co-led by investors including Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital, HV Capital and Bezos Expeditions. In January 2026, LeCun became founding chair of the Technical Research Board of Logical Intelligence, an AI company developing energy-based (EBM) reasoning systems. == Honours and awards == LeCun is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and the French Académie des Sciences. He has received honorary doctorates from Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) in Mexico City in 2016, from EPFL in 2018, from Université Côte d'Azur in 2021, from Università di Siena in 2023, and from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2023. In 2014, he received the IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award and in 2015, the PAMI Distinguished Researcher Award. In 2018, LeCun was awarded the IRI Medal, established by the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), and the Harold Pender Award, given by the University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, he received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement. In March 2019, LeCun won the 2018 Turing Award, sharing it with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton. In 2022, he received the Princess of Asturias Award in the category "Scientific Research", along with Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Demis Hassabis. In 2023, the President of France made him a Chevalier (Knight) of the French Legion of Honour. During the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2024 in Davos, he received the Global Swiss AI Award 2023. The same year, he received the grand prize of the VinFuture Prize alongside Yoshua Bengio, Jensen Huang, Geoffrey Hinton, and Fei-Fei Li for their groundbreaking contributions to neural networks and deep learning algorithms. In 2025 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering jointly with Yoshua Bengio, Bill Dally, Geoffrey E. Hinton, John Hopfield, Jensen Huang and Fei-Fei Li.

Xinhua–Sogou AI news anchor

Xinhua News Agency and Sogou of China developed an artificial intelligence (AI) for news reporting purposes. The AI was unveiled in 2018. It is touted to be the "world's first AI news anchor". == History == The AI was unveiled at the 2018 World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, China. The AI devises avatars patterned after real life Xinhua anchors. The AI patterned after Qiu Hao spoke in Chinese, while the one derived from the likeness of Zhang Zhao speaks in English. The unveiling of the AI raised concerns of its impact on employment. Xinhua and Sogou unveiled Xin Xiaomeng, an AI with a female avatar in 2019. People's Daily followed suit by unveiling its own AI newscaster in 2023.

DeepRoute.ai (Chinese: 元戎启行) is a Chinese autonomous driving company founded in 2019 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China. The company develops full-stack self-driving solutions including perception, decision-making, and control systems. == History == DeepRoute.ai was founded in February 2019 in Shenzhen, China, by Zhou Guang (周光), who serves as the company's CEO. In September 2019, the company collaborated with Dongfeng for a live-streamed autonomous driving demonstration. In October 2019, during the 7th Military World Games, DeepRoute.ai conducted Robotaxi demonstration operations. In November 2019, it obtained an intelligent connected vehicle road test permit for public roads in Shenzhen. In October 2020, DeepRoute.ai signed an "Autonomous Driving Leadership Project" with Dongfeng to build one of China's largest autonomous fleets. In August 2020, DeepRoute.ai announced its partnership with Cao Cao Mobility, a Geely-backed ride-hailing company, to test Robotaxis in Hangzhou for daily operations, planning to provide Robotaxis during the 2022 Asian Games. In September 2021, DeepRoute.ai secured US$300 million in a Series B funding round led by Alibaba. In December 2021, the company unveiled its DeepRoute-Driver 2.0, an L4-level autonomous driving solution comprising five solid-state lidar sensors, eight cameras, a proprietary computing system and an optional millimeter-wave radar. with a production cost of under US$10,000. In June 2022, it partnered with Deppon Express to provide autonomous light truck freight transfer services. In March 2023, the company launched its high-precision map-free intelligent driving solution, DeepRoute-Driver 3.0. In November 2024, Great Wall Motor announced a $100 million Series C funding round for Deeproute. With this, Deeproute has completed five rounds of financing, raising a cumulative total of over $500 million. Its shareholders include Fosun RZ Capital, Yunqi Partners, Alibaba, Vision Plus Capital, and Dongfeng, among others. In the same month, Deeproute.ai emphasised that they were in "deep cooperation" with Nvidia and spoke on being part of the first batch of companies in China to get a hold of Nvidia's newer Thor chip for cars which will be used in a new system released next year. This new system will help manage more complex driving scenarios through visual cues. == Products == === VLA Model === VLA Model is a Vision–language–action model designed for autonomous driving systems. It integrates visual perception, semantic understanding, and action decision-making into a unified framework, aiming to enhance the safety and adaptability of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in complex road environments. The model was officially launched on August 26, 2025, as the core of DeepRoute.ai's DeepRoute IO 2.0 platform. The VLA model is characterized by its "visual-language-action" architecture, which incorporates a chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning capability inspired by large language models. This design is intended to address the "black box" limitations of traditional end-to-end autonomous driving systems by enabling the model to analyze information, infer causality, and make decisions in a more transparent and interpretable manner. === Appliance === The company has partnered with several automakers including Dongfeng Motor Corporation and Geely to develop and test autonomous vehicles.

CuckooChess

CuckooChess is an advanced free and open-source chess engine under the GNU General Public License written in Java by Peter Österlund. CuckooChess provides an own GUI, and optionally supports the Universal Chess Interface protocol for the use with external GUIs such as Arena. An Android port is available, where its GUI is also based on Peter Österlund's Stockfish port dubbed DroidFish. The program uses the Chess Cases chess font, created by Matthieu Leschemelle. The name CuckooChess comes due that the transposition table is based on Cuckoo hashing. Android app based chess gaming app Droidfish employs both CuckooChess and Stockfish chess engines. Similarly, Kickstarter funded AI based virtual reality chess game Square Off also uses CuckooChess engine. It has an ELO rating of 2583 (as of July 2018) and a rank of 135‑137 in the Computer Chess Rating List.
